This style of trunk was built
to withstand the daily bashing that our country's baggage handlers enjoyed
dishing out.
Built as a sturdy trunk
to begin with, and then covered in oak slats that are about 1/4" thick
on all sides and the top.
The Excelsior Trunk Co seems
to get credit as the pioneer of this style, but it didn't take long for
other trunk makers to copy the style.
No maker's mark or label
or tag on this one, so we don't really know who made it. We know
it was made well though.
Beautiful brass lock that
polished up nicely, and we found a key that works the mechanism (not the
original key, but it works).
We've cleaned it up, sanded
it down, polished the metal as best we were able, and finished it with
a few coats of tung oil.
This trunk was owned by
E.T. Taber of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, according to the very nice hand
lettering at one end.
This trunk measures 30 inches
long by 19 inches wide, and it's 22" tall.
