scrap is all chromium-tanned leather that's left over from manufacturing
shoes, belts, and handbags.
Pieces range from small
strings to odd shapes about the size of your hand; a few that are a bit
bigger. Good for small projects, straps,
key fobs, that sort of thing
- or put some of it in an onion bag and stick it under your car seat to
get that new car smell back again.

making operation, this skirting leather comes from USA cows and is tanned
and finished in the USA as well.

Belting Leather Scrap This is nice veg tan/chrome
re-tanned belting cowhide, tanned and finished right here in the USA.
Thickness is about 8/9 oz,
which is about the same
as 1/8 of an inch. Single layers of this leather were being used
to make police and military belts. Scrap pieces are
generally quite large (for
scrap) and very clean. Black or brown on the surface, and some pieces
are solid color, while others are tan on the edges and underside.
Ten pound boxes are priced

Industry Leather Scrap Scrap leather from the garment
industry - what you've got right here is a mix of soft and not so soft
leathers, all thin, and almost all cowhide or calf hide, in a random
mix of colors, patterns,
and tempers. Pieces are larger than average for scrap, ranging from
the size of your hand up to a couple of square feet of total surface area.

Gator, in a wide variety of colors and textures This scrap leather is chromium
tanned exotic species - caiman, alligator, snake, ostrich, emu, antelope,
kudu, lizard, and some other things like frog and fish leathers (but they
don't smell bad at all).
This is all from the high
end garment business, left over from production. Pieces are smallish,
smaller than your hand, but may be useful as trims or on small projects
like earrings.

These are partial hides
that we call panels; they run about 8-10 inches wide by 10-12 inches long.

bottom of a pair of large men's shoes, or a couple of pairs if you're just
using this on the heel and toe area.

Hides These are skivers that were
cut from chrome tanned white tail deer hides
This is USA deer leather.
Chrome tanned, dyed white
(dye penetrates all the way through the leather),
but they look a little off-white
to very light grayish in color.
The leather thickness ranges
from 1 to 3 oz (1/64" to a little under 1/16 of an inch).
Very, very soft. How
soft? Like an old t-shirt that you can't throw away because
it still has that stain
on it from that Kansas concert at the Hollywood Sportatorium. It's

Embossed Cowhide Scrap Embossed cowhide looks a
lot like the real thing, but it's just cowhide. They do a good job
of making it look like real alligator or crocodile
leather. This stuff
is jet black, and we sell it in ten pound boxes for $50 flat, 48-state
shipping included.
The leather is about 4 oz
in thickness (1/16 of an inch) and is fairly firm. Pieces are rather
large for scrap, and every so often you'll find a piece of
some other embossed pattern
in there, like lizard or basket weave.

Upholstery Leather Scrap This is all cowhide scrap
derived from furniture making up here in Maine, by one of the country's
most talented furniture making companies.
Pieces are primarily earth
tones with a few colors mixed in; all hand sized or larger, with some as
large as 3 sq ft of total surface area.
Thickness is 2.5 to 3.25
oz, or 0.8 - 1.3 mm, and it's all soft/mellow temper.

The tannery used these to

Tannery Sample Notebooks If you'd like to spend some
time looking at small sample swatches of leather, and if you'd like those
swatches to be glued to a piece of paper, and if you'd like to
see a name and description
of each sample on the paper next to the leather, and if you'd like all
the pages of these samples to be bound together in a very good
quality three ring binder,
and if you'd like the front of that binder to say something like the name
of the tannery, then, sister, these notebooks are for YOU!
These arrived as part of
a sample hide shipment - we've got about 100 books, most are the same but
there are a few different ones (by 'different' we
mean they contain samples
of leathers not seen in the other books). Each notebook weighs 3.5
pounds. Maybe you like reading about leather samples,
or maybe the little samples
are of some use to you once you peel them off the paper (paper will remain
stuck to the back of each sample), or
maybe you just need some
good 3-ring binders. Whatever. We just sell them. Price

chromium tanned, that was cut into strips 5mm wide and woven into 'vamps'
which end up being fancy dress shoes.

these have a slit down the middle where your foot would have slid into
the shoe

photo on the left you can see the interruption of the weave pattern on

The Worst Side Leather
We've Ever Sold It's a Crock! A leather this horrific
can only be sold on the Scrap Leather page. This stuff started out
to be nice, but after sitting in a warehouse for too long a time it's now
a ridiculous mess.
Still, if you need to practice
with some cheap leather, or want to throw some leather into an art classroom
and see what the kids can create, this may be for you.
Cowhide sides, 18 to 20
sq ft each, thickness = 2.5 to 3 oz, or 1.0 to 1.2mm, in a lovely color
that looks exactly like something you'd see in a diaper. The hides
were rolled up and left to sit for a few years, so
now the lovely color has
stuck to itself and peels away when you unroll the leather. Tanners
call this 'crocking' when the color peels off. It's a crock alright.
If this leather was in good
shape we'd price it at $80 per side, but since it's scrap now we're selling
it for $45/side or get 3 for $100.
